How Do Australia’s Airports Compare On A World Scale?

How did your local airport do?

Some of Australia’s airports have received high praise in the annual airport awards from the experts over at Sleeping In Airports.

Brisbane Airport was named the best airport in the South Pacific for 2016, which wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has spent a night there before an overseas flight.

“Brisbane Airport’s claim to South Pacific fame is its highly sleepable environment. Plenty of comfortable couches are scattered pre and post security, and in a few areas, you’ll even find dimmed lights and soothing music,” the website said. “Some travellers this past year were even directed to these areas by helpful airport staff who realized they were in the airport for the long haul.”

Adelaide Airport came second on the list, with the friendly staff and tidy terminals praised by the website’s airport experts – although they did note that it closes overnight.

“The terminals are praised for being reliably tidy, and the overall layout is easy to navigate. Staff in the terminals are consistently friendly, and they manage to keep lineups to a happy minimum. Couple those features with free Wi-Fi, and you’ve got the second best airport in the South Pacific,” they said.

However it wasn’t such a happy story for Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. They came in 21st, 27th and 29th respectively on a global list of the Worst Airports For Sleeping. Apparently trying to get a few hours of shut-eye in these airports is nearly impossible.

Singapore took out the title of Best Airport for Sleeping 2016, followed by Seoul Incheon International Airport in South Korea. Brisbane squeezed into the list in 30th place.

The results were calculated based on votes in the 2016 Airport Survey.
