Police in california are hunting for a gunman who shot dead one person and critically wounded two others near a polling booth.

Azusa police say one person has been killed and two are critical. CNN says police helicopter has taken at least two shooting victims to hospital.

Polling centres in the area have reportedly been locked down and the shooter remains active.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Scroggin has told the Los Angeles Times that police are dealing with at least one heavily-armed suspect.

The incident happened in a residential neighbourhood, Officer Jerry Willson of the Azusa Police Department, adding: “This is a very volatile and critical situation.”

CNN says no shots were fired inside the polling station, but voters inside heard them ring out.

One voter said people starting running to the station before the doors were locked.

He told CNN “a massive shooting is happening” and police had ordered them to stay inside.

Another voter also heard the shots.

“At first, I thought it was construction but people came running into the room saying they see a guy with a bulletproof vest and a white shirt,” the unnamed woman told CNN.
