A man named as the prime suspect in the weekend's bombings in New York, has been arrested and charged following a shootout with police and FBI agents in New Jersey.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was hit with five counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two gun charges, after a bar owner found him sleeping in the vestibule and tipped off police on Monday morning.
He is yet to be formally charged over the bombings, but more charges are expected in the Federal Court.
Agents swarmed in to arrest the Afghan-born American, which resulted in a shootout and Rahami being taken to hospital with gun shot wounds to his shoulder and leg. Four officers were also injured, but not critically.
Police released Rahami's picture on Monday morning after fingerprints were left behind on an unexploded bomb, found a few blocks away from another bomb that was detonated on Saturday night, injuring 29 people. It's also believed he was responsible for planting another bomb in New Jersey.
US authorities say Rahami was not on any terror watch lists, further investigations show he made several trips back to Afghanistan and a childhood friend stated he felt Rahami had started to change after going on a '"life-changing trip" to his home country 2 years ago.
Police are now looking into whether Rahami acted alone or was part of a much larger radicalised group, however all indications suggest he was the only individual involved.
