Smokers Will Soon Be Slugged $40 For A Pack Of Cigarettes
Legislation To Increase Tobacco Excise Clears Parliament
Aussie smokers could be paying $40 for a packet of cigarettes by 2020.
Bipartisan legislation to increase the tobacco excise by 12.5 per cent over the next four years cleared parliament on Wednesday night, it's future will now be decided in the Senate.
Labor backed the legislation, having announced similar measures before the July 2 election, believing higher prices will encourage smokers to quit.
Debate on the tax hike sparked calls for a rethink of Australia's ban on nicotine e-cigarettes, with Liberal backbencher James Paterson arguing the healthier alternative should be available.
