'Midget Cup' Controversy Posted by Matt & Jo Show 13 October, 2009 - 10:56 AM

A 'Midget Cup' held at Cranbourne Cup over the weekend has been slammed as offensive angering racegoers and Victorian Racing Minister Rob Hulls.

Mr Hulls has described the cup as an "embarrassment" and as doing nothing for the Victorian racing industry.

Three short-statured men took to the backs of three men who then raced down the home straight.

Do you find the race offensive or is this another case of political correctness gone mad?

Matt & Jo spoke to Arty, the short-statured winner of the race in question and asked him for his opinion on the controversy:

I think it all depends if the 'riders' wanted to take part. If they did and didnt feel offended then I guess thats the answer.

I think it was obviously done in a lighthearted way but if its offended people then they shouldnt do it again.

I was not aware of the midget cup derby so i was not there. It looked like alot of fun. i am not a racist person. I do not look at colour, natio or size of people. If the parties involved with the race were ok about it why should it bother anyone else. We should not hide away with what disability we may have instead get out there and enjoy yourselfs to the maximum. Life can be shorten at any time. Live life have fun and laugh alot. Laughing at someone doesnt have to mean the worst.

Hasn't comedy always been about taking the micky out of someone else's misfortune or difference?
We laugh at someone pretending to be snobbish. How does this differ to laughing at someone pretending to be from another country. Comedians spend their lives making fun of others. We pay money to see these people. Why is this different?
    What about Benny Hill?
What about funniest home videos? We laugh at people who have suffered pain and embarrassment but get on our high horse over individuals having fun, laughing at themselves and not caring what other people think.
Does society want to kill laughter all together?
We are forcing people to stop being themselves in fear of the repercussions of society.
I always tell my kids they need to laugh at themselves and not take themselves too seriously or otherwise they will become miserable, grumpy, unhappy people that spend their time judging other people.

I think everyone needs to lighten up. As aussies we are used to being fun, humerous & laid back, and in my opinion, we are becoming more uptight & sensitive about things that a few years ago, no one would have blinked any eye at. No one was hurt, physically or emotionally here, nor last week with all of the 'Hey Hey' drama... Can't we still just have a laugh & bit of fun anymore?
