These Bushfire Area Businesses Need Your Support! Posted by Team Matt & Jo 5 February, 2010 - 6:34 AM

(Winery In The Kinglake Ranges)

One year on from Black Saturday the communities affected by the bushfires are re-building their lives, and the national park is regenerating once more.

Local businesses and tourism sites have never needed your dollars more - so why not plan a trip to this stunning region just a short drive from Melbourne?

Here's some of the businesses that would love to see you there:

The Kinglake Cookbook

Author Chris Owen helped form the 1050 relief centre in Kinglake West, and managed the supply of relief and cooking of meals. 1050 and its volunteers cooked approx 400 meals a day for nearly 6 weeks, lifelong friendships were forged while they worked together , and a promise was made to not abandon the community. Chris wrote and self published the Kinglake Cookbook, now the people who were involved in the 1050 relief centre are all banding together to spread the word and sell as many books as possible . All profits from the sales of the book will go directly to  the Kinglake and Kinglake West CFA’s.

Smash Court Tennis

My name is Michael Stott, I am 17 years old next week and started my tennis coaching business last July. I was approached by the Kinglake Ranges Tennis Club to take up the position of club coach after the fires when the club had no coach and were struggling. I would like to take this opportunity to let the community know that tennis is back and alive on the mountain and any one, any age and any standard can call me  and link into social or coaching groups.  My business name is Smash Court Tennis and I am based at the Kinglage Ranges Tennis Club at Kinglake West. Call 57 865621 for details.

Alternate Power Systems

Dawn and her partner harness any form of power on and off the mountain to provide eco and economical energy.

White Rose Cottage B&B, Chum Creek

Two beautiful four bedroom houses sleeping 10 and 12 people. Ideal for weddings, family reunions or as a base to visit local wineries, the sanctuary and the hedge maze.

Black Saturday Charity Run

The Black Saturday Run (One Year On) was the idea of three friends from Melbourne, Martin Edwards, Eric Louw and Jarrod Kanizay. Starting on Saturday the 6th February 2010 at 5am (dawn) from Federation Square in Melbourne CBD. The first day takes them 120kms to Queenscliff, 35km North East of Geelong. They endeavour to make it there in time to catch the 7pm ferry to Sorrento. Overnight, the 3 friends, and their 3 support crew will stay in Sorrento, only to continue the journey at 5am on Sunday 7th February on to Melbourne. This is the longest that the boys have ever run over a 2 day period, and is the first (known) time that any person has run around Port Philip Bay. Donate money here

I have been listening to your broadcast from Kinglake this morning and cannot stop the tears pouring down my face. I never contact radio stations but had to tell you this is the most heart string pulling radio I have ever heard. This is a fantastic way to help everyone cope and also remember.
    Love your work

We are in the neighbouring town of Christmas Hills, we border St. Andrews and had a lot of people lose everything too. Although no loss was suffered via the fires, we would like to put in a plug for our neighbour Ponyland Equestrian. They have had a major downturn in trail rides and holiday camps which we believe is due to people not visiting the area as much anymore. Our daughter works there and we try to support the locals as much as possible. The phone number for Ponyland is 9730 1334 and is at 33 Osborne Road, Christmas Hills. Thank you!

Just wanted to say thank you for the terrific job you did in Kinglake. It's important for people to know that, whist a year has passed, people are still in trouble. My parents (Kevin and Rhonda Butler - Kilmore East) had their farm burnt out, and shortly after created an organisation called 'Blaze Aid' (www.blazeaid.com) to help rebuild fences of people affected, eventually laying enough fencing wire to circle the globe. They've worked 7 days a week since Feb 7th 09 and still have a couple of volunteers working. Like my parents, your support is invaluable to those who are still suffering. Well done.
